Zuma – DIFC, Dubai. Restaurant Review
Zuma isn’t just a restaurant, it’s also a bar and lounge, which also happens to serve the most amazing cocktails. I’d frequented the bar several times but never really considered it as a restaurant that I would be okay to eat in. One evening I got talking to the manager, who informed me that they could in fact accommodate people on a gluten free diet.
If I’m honest, I wasn’t expecting that much. Definitely no soy sauce or anything coated in flour, which I believe to be one of the nicest parts of Japanese food! We ordered a couple of drinks before they brought the menu to our table. I was just about to ask what I was able to eat when I was informed that what they had given me was their gluten free menu.
I was shocked, but extremely amazed and happy. I couldn’t believe they actually had a menu that was 100% gluten free. It was the first time I’d experienced this sort of forward planning in the region and it was nice to see some careful consideration taken by restaurants for those people who suffer from celiac disease.
I was spoilt for choice. The wide ranging Japanese menu comprised of “classic dishes with bold, intense flavours” with an “emphasis on simple presentation acquired through quality ingredients”. Honestly, I couldn’t fault a thing. The overall ambience was wonderful, the staff were extremely helpful and the food was delicious. If you find yourself there I would recommend the chili squid and the chicken wings, they were incredible (and something we can’t usually eat in a restaurant).
Zuma is located in the heart of the city in Dubai International Financial Centre. The website describes itself as “following the Japanese izakaya style of dining, [the] food is served to share. The dishes are steadily brought to the table creating an informal yet sophisticated style of eating and drinking, with a contemporary twist” and if that description is anything to go by, that is exactly what they have achieved. It truly was a wonderful evening.
