West 14th Steakhouse, Oceana Beach Club – Dubai. Restaurant Review
Ah West 14th Steakhouse, a surprisingly good find in one of the quieter parts of town. The staff were more than accommodating, going out of their way to make you feel welcomed upon arrival. After being seated, I explained my allergy to the waiter and it wasn’t long before the head chef came out to speak to me. The chef was kind enough to take me through the entire menu, making his recommendations here and there, even assuring me that when it comes to allergies he likes to handle them himself as he understands it can be quite problematic in Dubai.
When it came to gluten free, there were more than enough options to choose from. But with choice comes decisions, so let me take you through our dinner. To start I ordered the pan seared foie gras with caramalised granny smith and berry coulis. The starter arrived and it was bigger than expected, but delicious nonetheless. The sweet caramel foie gras mixed with the tanginess of the fruit and the rich texture of the jam allowed for a well-balanced and complimentary dish.
For the main I opted for one of the steaks. They list both grain and grass fed cuts, they even have hormone free options. I personally prefer grass fed meat so I opted for the 21 days aged Donald Russell on the bone with broiled zucchini, chimichurri mixed mushrooms and a specially made red wine jus. Just before the mains arrived, the waiter visited our table with a knife selection so we could choose our preferred knife based on weight (and colour). They even brought a huge condiment tray containing everything under the sun, I guess it’s safe to say that there’s never any shortage of mustard at West 14th.
The main was delicious. The steak was tender and beautifully cooked, the mushrooms had the perfect amount of truffle oil drizzled on, and the zucchini had a nice spicy kick to it. The dessert options were lacking on the night we visited but gluten free desserts are quite hard to come by, so nothing unusual there. They do offer sorbet but this is not made in-house so I’d recommend avoiding it just in case.
West 14th is definitely somewhere I’d recommend. I found it to be a lot more relaxed than a lot of the other restaurants in Dubai. Maybe this was because of its outside terrace, perfect for smoking shisha or enjoying a drink or two. Or perhaps it was the band that played beautiful jazz music late into the early hours. Whatever it was, West 14th is the perfect place to hang out and eat with your friends and family.
