Chocolate is life. And proven to be good for the heart, circulation and brain. Research suggests we should eat more if it.
Within reason of course. Snoffing 3 bars of highly processed chocolate each day is not good for your health. Or the summer bod. The right kind of chocolate on the other hand, well… that’s a different story.
Picture a beautiful sleepy haven just south of Byron Bay. Well that’s where the story for Brokenhead Company began back in 2015. And all from a home kitchen Broken Head Beach in Australia. Their mission was to produce high quality, organic, sustainable and recyclable products that help keep you, the Earth and all its inhabitants safe. Their products? All natural and hand made.

Chewy, creamy coconut covered in coconut milk chocolate, coconut, cacao butter, evaporated coconut nectar. We’d say this is like a vegan version of the bounty of your childhood. But without the sugar hit.

Yes, all our products contain various nuts, and many contain sesame seeds or sesame derivatives. While we adhere to strict WHS standards in our kitchens, our machinery and equipment are shared with other companies, and we cannot guarantee there is no cross contamination of ingredients. If you have a severe tree nut or sesame allergy we cannot recommend you consume any of our products.
With the exception of our ‘Smooches’ bars, we do not cook any of our products. In order to reach the correct tempering of our organic house-made vegan chocolate, it must be heated to 50 degrees Celsius. We cannot guarantee that all the base ingredients we use have not been heat-treated. For example, brown rice syrup, maple syrup and coconut nectar – all common sweeteners used in raw food products, are all always heat-treated when they are produced.
Our food philosophy is ‘Organic’. Almost all of our ingredients are certified Organic, and this is something that is very important to us! We are constantly re-evaluating and sourcing the freshest, most healthy whole food ingredients, focusing on organic first, but also trying to use local and Australian products when possible, to reduce our carbon footprint.
For example, we may choose insecticide free Australian walnuts (tested and certified to have no chemical residue) rather than organic walnuts that have tocome from California. Another example is the Vanilla Extract we use. While it is not certified organic, the farming practices used is organic, but because it comes from many small family farms in Papua New Guinea (also providing a livelihood for the local residents) it is not possible that they can acquire organic certification.
Therefore, at present, we are not certified Organic, as it is a very costly and lengthy process for a small company such as ours. Being not certified, at present, allows us to use local , spray free, and uncertified organic ingredients where it makes the most sense. Getting Organic Certification is something we are looking into for the future. For your convenience, the certified organic ingredients we use in each product clearly labelled with an * on our ingredients list. If nuts are certified insecticide free, we have also noted this.
