McGettigan’s DWTC – Gluten Free Dining, UAE.
McGettigan’s is more of a bar than a restaurant, but nevertheless it serves food so it was the perfect opportunity to test the waters. From looking at their website, I can see that they describe themselves as having ‘’unique décor, delicious Irish food & drinks, the best Irish and international entertainment and sporting events are the ingredients that have made McGettigan’s Irish Pubs such a success in the United Arab Emirates.”.
I find that McGettigan’s is a great place to go after work for drinks, or even during your lunch hour for that matter. They have regular entertainment but I wouldn’t recommend going if you’d rather avoid places that are extremely loud and smoky. Anyway, I happened to find myself in this bar after work one night and I was starving. Everyone was eating (and unfortunately I had no gluten free snacks to keep me going) so I decided to ask the waiters if there was anything on the menu that was suitable for celiacs.
Oh my, the expression ‘it’s like talking to a brick wall’ has never ringed more true. I tried explaining it a few times but to no avail so I asked if I would be able to speak to the head chef. The chef was nice enough to come out and speak to me so I asked him everything from what was safe on the menu, to what he recommended, and whether or not he actually understood what celiac was and the issues with cross-contamination. Eventually I felt that he understood it enough so I ordered.
My food came (I’d ordered chicken wings and chips) and boy do I regret it. They assured me that the chips were gluten free and they didn’t cook the wings in the same oil as the fried fish or anything with batter. But there was most definitely a cross-contamination issue. I guess what I’m trying to say is, keep this as your local watering hole, not your go-to eatery.
